Areca catechu / Areca palm / 槟榔

  • Introduction
    Areca catechu is more than 10 meters high and can reach up to 30 meters high, with obvious annular leaf marks. The leaves are clustered at the top of the stem, 1.3-2 m long, mostly pinnae, glabrous on both sides, narrowly lanceolate, 30-60 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, the upper pinnae are confluent, and the apex has irregular tooth lobes. Monoecious, the inflorescence is multi-branched, the inflorescence axis is stout and flattened, the branches are tortuous, 25-30 cm long, the upper part is slender, and the male flowers in 1 or 2 rows are born, while the female flowers are solitary at the base of the branches, the fruit is oblong or ovate, 3-5 cm long, orange-yellow, the mesocarp is thick, fibrous. The seeds are ovate, the base is flattened, the endosperm is chewed, and the embryo is basal. The flowering and fruiting period is from March to April.
