Papaver somniferum / Opium poppy / 罂粟

  • Introduction
    Papaver somniferum prefers acidic soils with plenty of sunshine and moist and breathable. I don't like a lot of rain, but I like wet places. Root spindle or tapering, monotyped. Stems 1 or more, cylindrical, unbranched or branched, very shortened or elongated, erect or raised, usually bristled, glabrous, milky-white, foul-smelling sap, with or without leaves. Flowers solitary, sparsely umbel-like racemes, pedicels or sometimes pedicels, elongated, erect, usually bristled. Capsule narrowly cylindrical, obovate or spherical, glabrous, sparsely spiny, distinctly ribbed or ribless, with a radial stigma under the fissure.
