Ananas comosus / Pineapple / 菠萝

  • Introduction
    Ananas comosus has short stems. Leaves numerous, rosette-arranged, sword-shaped, 40-90 cm long, 4-7 cm wide, apex acuminate, entirety or acutely toothed, ventral green, dorsal pinkish-green, margins and apex often maroonish-red, leaves born at the top of the inflorescence smaller, often reddish. The inflorescences are drawn from the leaf clusters, like pine balls, 6-8 cm long, enlarged when fruiting, the bracts are green at the base, pale red on the upper part, triangular-ovate, the sepals are broadly ovate, fleshy, reddish at the apex, about 1 cm long, the petals are oblong, pointed at the ends, about 2 cm long, purplish-red in the upper part, and white in the lower part. The polyanthrocarpus is fleshy and more than 15 cm long. Flowering period: summer to winter.
