Protea cynaroides

Description

Protea cynaroides, or king protea, is an evergreen shrub in the Proteaceae family, native to South Africa. It’s known for its large, bowl-shaped flower heads, often pink or white, blooming from spring to summer. Growing 3-6 feet tall, it thrives in well-drained, acidic soil and full sun. King protea is a striking ornamental plant, used in floral arrangements and gardens. It’s drought-tolerant and attracts birds and bees. As South Africa’s national flower, it symbolizes resilience and beauty, thriving in Mediterranean climates but requiring protection from frost.
