Ficus carica
Ficus carica, the common fig, is a deciduous tree or shrub in the Moraceae family, native to the Middle East and Mediterranean. It produces sweet, edible figs, typically harvested in late summer to fall. Growing 10-30 feet tall, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Figs are rich in nutrients and used fresh, dried, or in preserves. The tree’s broad, lobed leaves provide ornamental value, and it’s suitable for gardens or orchards. Ficus carica is drought-tolerant once established and can be grown in containers in cooler climates.
